Rob Rostau's passion for music started at the tender age of ten, when he bartered for his first guitar in Tijuana, Mexico. A six note song called "bug" promised enough potential that his mother supported guitar lessons in addition to the already ongoing piano lessons. He later played in a couple of groups in high school mainly covering heavy metal and rock songs. Rob continued to pursue music in college studying music theory, guitar, piano, choir and composition. Eventually, he was invited to play music in Southern India which proved to be an enlightening experience, as it was his first exposure to playing for large audiences. Rob was involved in multiple college music groups and excelled as a studio production and engineering major. Upon graduation he founded the bands Rhetoric and TYSK. Rob composed and co-wrote all of the original music. In addition, he played rhythm and lead guitar and sang lead and backup vocals in both bands. This culminated in the recording of the Rhetoric demo in 1994. Rob's career took a different path, however, which relocated him from his native Denver to California to become a Doctor of Chiropractic. During his medical studies he still reserved time to create his own music consisting mostly of alternative rock as well as a mix of other genres. The collection of songs was recorded in his home studio and became the "Random Wonder" album and sequentially morphed into the self titled release "Rostau". Paralleling this effort he began to frequent the Open Mic scene around the San Francisco Bay area and met many great talents and teamed up with some of them, playing bass, guitar and sometimes performing his own works. One of those connections lead to a friendship with Monica Ashton and soon Rob became the electric bass player for the Monica Ashton Jazz Band and recorded with them at Skywalker Studio in December 2006. Rob is planning to create another CD of original music in the near future. “Rob is one of those people who does it all. He’s a chiropractor by day, and a very talented musician, composer, sound engineer and performer by night. He has always been there when I needed him for a gig, always ready to do sound if nobody else showed up (which was most of the time), always ready to play some of his music if we needed a few more tunes to fill up a set, and he always seemed to bring great insight to my music, adding very cool-sounding bass licks where needed, and keeping the band on an even keel. Patrick summed it up one night, “you’re the glue, man.”Doctor Rob, thanks for all your help.” – Monica Ashton
